Plans for affordable homes are approved
NEW affordable homes in Cardiff have been given the go-ahead.
Planning committee members gave their backing to 16 new affordable homes being built at the site of the former Ty Newydd care home on Heol Trelai in Ely.
The development will include two blocks of apartments and two bungalows for people with learning difficulties. The plans include 18 parking spaces. Councillors withdrew their objections to the plans but some residents objected to the impact on traffic.
Residents said that during previous works, drives and pavements were blocked by contractors.
They also say that the new homes would mean more traffic.
Another development of 16 homes in Caerau, as applied for by the council, was also approved.
The land is at the former cadets centre off Caldicot Road. It will have 16 homes built on it.
There will be a mix of houses, seven two-bedroom, two three-bedroom and one four-bedroom, and six one-bedroom flats.
Flats being built on the former road safety centre at Briardene, Gabalfa, were also approved.
They included 30 two-bed apartments and nine affordable homes.
In total, 23% of the development would be affordable homes.
There has been years of talk about development at the site.
Conservative Councillor Lyn Hudson said she wanted to see visitor spaces included in the car parks.
She was told there was possibly scope for extra spaces to be included in the design.
One of the conditions of approval was for the developer to pay £5,000 towards changing parking rules in the area and £36,000 to install a barrier to stop people accessing the site from the flyover.
The plans got support from councillors, with Labour’s Ali Ahmed says that the two applications for affordable housing “have been the best of the day”.
