SCHNAUZER – IT’S A RECORD BREAKER!
MORE than 320 schnauzers and their owners took part in the annual Schnauzerfest in a record-breaking turnout yesterday.
The fluffy dogs walked around Barry Island to raise funds to allow dogs saved from terrible puppy farm/ breeding backgrounds get the veterinary care they need, so they can go on to have good lives.
Schnauzerfest, now in its fourth year, is a nationwide collection of fundraising events held on October 14 and 15. Walks and other social activities also kicked off all over the country in order to raise money.
One dog, Woody, went with his 19-year-old owner Ella Mynett, from Rhiwbina, who broke her leg on a night out with friends at Birmingham University, and has returned home for six weeks while she recovers.
Woody, 11, wasn’t too keen to walk, so sat on Ella’s lap as she wheeled him round.
She said: “This is the first time we’ve come, and even though he was a bit nervous, he really enjoyed it. I did walk a bit on my crutches, but he seems happy sitting on my lap.
“I love schnauzers, and Woody is about the fifth one we’ve had in the family. They are just lovely dogs and I’d definitely take him back to Schnauzerfest next year.”
The walk began at Marco’s Cafe on the promenade at 10.30am, and then dog walkers and their furry friends walked to Jacksons Bay where the schnauzers were allowed to enjoy the beach off-lead. They then returned to the Prom for the raffle and a bacon butty and a drink.
Nick Rutter, who ran the event, said: “I’ve just got to say a massive thank you to all those who turned up to make it the biggest Schnauzerfest at Barry Island.
“More than £1,000 was raised for DBARC and Schnauzerfest from the raffle.”
