JOSHUA GEARS UP FOR CITY FIGHT NIGHT
BOXING fans got their first glimpse of world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua yesterday ahead of this Saturday’s main event against Carlos Takam at the Principality Stadium.
Joshua was the headline act at the public workout, where he stepped into the ring at St David’s Hall in the Welsh capital.
A venue that is well-versed in hosting classical and brass musical concerts, saw a boxing ring plonked at its centre as several hundred fans streamed in to the event free of charge.
While the action in the ring was fairly relaxed, it dawned on those in the arena just what a force of nature the defending champion is.
The athlete let the feet work and the hands fly in a composed, relaxed manner but it was lost on nobody in the hall just how much power the 28-year-old possesses.
Muscles bulging, he acknowledged the crowd as he stepped to the ring before getting down to some light work with his coach Rob McCracken. Afterwards there was some compulsory work to do in front of the advertising boards. But this was his show and he worked the room flawlessly.
It got the loudest roar of the night, understandably, but it was followed closely by the cheer for hometown boy Joe Cordina. The Cardiff lightweight, who grew up in St Mellons, will fight on the undercard in front of his home fans for the first time this weekend.
