TRIBUTES Chief inspector loved his family, singing and football

-

A CHIEF inspector who always put the needs of others before himself has been remembered as a devoted family man with a passion for football.

The life of Stephen Fryzer from Merthyr Tydfil has been celebrated following his death on September 10 at the age of 57.

After joining South Wales Police in 1978, Stephen rose through the ranks from a police constable to a chief inspector.

A true professional, the former Pen Y Dre High School pupil always maintained the respect and admiration of those he worked with thanks to his commitment to caring for the needs of others.

His legacy will be continued through both the policing systems he put in place and the integrity and humility he held.

Speaking at Stephen’s funeral, South Wales Police Chief Constable Peter Vaughan said: “He was totally committed, professional and passionate about all he did, Steve had an underlying dry wit and humour that always shone through. What’s absolutely clear is that he made a real difference. He was a truly remarkable man.”

A dedicated family figure, Stephen’s memory will be continued through his beloved wife of 35 years Karen, his devoted daughters Ellen, Hannah, Ruth and Grace and his two grandsons. He will be sorely missed by his whole family.

As well as his family, Stephen also had a passion for football and was an avid Chelsea supporter, as well as a loyal member of the Merthyr Town Football Club walking football team, where he represented Wales in November 2016.

Elliott Evans, community development officer for Merthyr Town FC, said: “Stephen attended every single week without fail and went to every session.

“He could be competitive and enjoyed winning but as soon as the whistle went, whatever happened was forgotten.

“Stephen was a big supporter of the club and attended regular fixtures for the first team.

“He will be dearly missed not just by the team but across the club.”

Among his many skills and qualities Stephen will also be remembered as a talented musician and singer who would win his family holidays year after year by entering singing competitions at their favourite holiday location.

Stephen received a police guard of honour at his funeral on Friday, September 22 with a special tribute by Merthyr Tydfil Fire Service. His family would like to thank both his walking football team, who desperately tried to save him and the air ambulance team who airlifted Stephen to hospital.

Thanks are also given to all those who sent messages of support and sympathy during this heartbreakingly sad time.
