‘Killer sexually assaulted me’, claims woman

-

A woman who claims she was sexually assaulted by a man who went on to murder his neighbour in a “sexually motivated” attack has admitted that she feels guilt at “not being believed”.

In a Channel 4 exclusive which aired last night, Megan – not her real name – speaks for the first time about claims that nursing assistant Kris Wade sexually assaulted her while she was having a seizure.

Wade is currently serving at least 21 years in prison after admitting killing Christine James, 65, at her Cardiff Bay flat in March 2016.

In an exclusive interview with Channel 4 News Correspondent Andy Davies, Megan claims Wade assaulted her when she was helpless and terrified at an Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board treatment centre for patients with learning disabilities in 2010.

She claims Wade lifted her top up and sexually assaulted her while she was having a seizure, before looking down her pyjama bottoms.

Megan, who has mild learning difficulties and a medical condition which leaves her body occasionally immobilized with seizures, told Channel 4: “Your head’s telling you: shout, scream, punch, hit out but your body just won’t move. It’s in my head now. It affects everything.”

Megan said the incident left her feeling dirty, confused and ashamed. She confided in her husband more than a year later when she tried to explain problems with intimacy.

She said: “It got to the point where you go into hospital and you have to be examined for a medical reason that’s normal, and you don’t trust people and you’re crying.

“And it got to the point where I wanted a baby, but I didn’t want to do what you have to do to make a baby.

“But then why shouldn’t I make a family for myself? I [have] done nothing wrong.”

In relation to the death of Christine James, Megan said: “I feel guilty that she’s been murdered because I wasn’t believed.

“I couldn’t prove it happened; there’s no cameras. Nothing. So it was my word against his. He was in the professional field and had people to back him up. It was only me against him.”

The case of former hospital worker Wade sparked an internal review by ABMU to look at his employment history.

This included the relationship between him and his father - who was then the health board’s mental health and learning disabilities clinical service director - regarding potential conflicts of interest, along with how the allegations were managed.

Published in August, the report revealed that Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board failed to follow reporting procedures fully when patients made sex assault allegations against him.

ABMU Health Board told Channel 4 News: “We would like to once more extend our heartfelt apologies to the three patients who were assaulted by Kris Wade. We also acknowledge that some of our staff did not follow procedures as robustly as they should have, and we apologise. We remain in dialogue with the patients and their families.

“However, in all three cases the health board did inform police, which resulted in criminal investigations.”
