THREE people were taken to hospital and a pet dog died after a house fire in Cardiff.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the fire happened at a property on North Road in Mynachdy in the early hours of yesterday.

Fire crews were called to the house at 4.57am and arrived on the scene within seven minutes.

A force spokesman said the fire was on the first floor and “well alight” upon arrival.

He added: “Four fire appliances attended the incident and crews wearing breathing apparatus entered the property, extinguished the fire and prevented it spreading to neighbouring properties.”

Four fire engines from Whitchurch, Roath and Cardiff Central attended and fought the fire for more than an hour.

A crew remained at the scene yesterday, while the cause of the fire was being investigated.

The spokesman added that four residents left the house before emergency services arrived and were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Jennie Griffiths, head of joint fire control for South Wales and Mid and West Fire and Rescue Services, said three people were taken to hospital and a pet dog had died.

The force spokesman added: “The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by specialist fire investigation officers.

“We would like to remind the public of the importance of smoke detectors in domestic properties to give early indication in case of a fire.”
