Disruption caused by gas works now over

-

GAS works in Rhiwbina which lasted for 12 weeks and meant traffic disruption have now finished.

Utilities company Wales and West had warned of road closures in Rhiwbina back in August as it started work to replace 100-year-old gas pipes.

This week, the company announced the works on Pantmawr Road had finished, and thanked the community for their patience during the “disruptive” project.

Works on other roads would continue until spring 2018, the company added.

On Friday, Francis Kirk, Wales and West Utilities programme controller for South Wales, said: “We’re really pleased to be able to say that we have finished work on Pantmawr Road in Rhiwbina – which has fully reopened this afternoon.

“This work forms part of our £2m investment in upgrading the gas pipes in the area so we can keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses, and prepare the gas network for the future.”

It comes after fears were raised by residents over the works, warning disruption would cause “chaos” and hit businesses in the village, doubling the length of rush-hour journeys.

Mr Kirk’s statement continued: “We are still working to upgrade old metal gas pipes on other roads in Rhiwbina, and this will continue until spring 2018.

“Anyone with any questions about our work can contact our Customer Service Team on 0800 912 2999.

“We know this work has been disruptive, and we would like to thank the local community and road users for their patience and support as we finished our essential work on Pantmawr Road.”
