Former champs looking to kick-start campaign

-

IT’S back to the Nathaniel Cars Welsh League action this weekend after most clubs were locked in a JD Welsh Cup battle seven days earlier.

In the First Division, former champions Caerau Ely host Cwmamman United at Cwrt y Ala.

Nana Baah’s team need to start garnering wins at home, as their fourpoint haul from 10 games leaves only Ton Pentre below them in the table.

“It’s a massive game for us tomorrow,” said Baah,

“Cwmamman are only two points ahead of us, so a win would leapfrog us out of the relegation places at least and hopefully kick-start our climb to midtable security.”

Kevin Richards’ return to management at Ton Pentre hasn’t reached the dizzy heights of his first successful spell yet.

The Bulldogs are yet to win a game since his reappointment three games ago.

And last week’s defeat to Panteg in the Welsh Cup was one of the shocks of the round.

Richards will need all his experience at this level of football as Ton are currently in bottom spot and have the tough task of travelling to current leaders Haverfordwest tomorrow.

Rhys Griffiths’ Penybont have secured one of the plum ties of the third round of the Welsh Cup with their reward for beating Monmouth 2-1 last weekend is a home tie against current Welsh Premier high-flyers Cardiff Met.

Griffiths will want his team to transfer their cup form to the league tomorrow at Glanford Park where Goytre United are their hosts in a fifth versus sixth-placed game.

Afan Lido are on home soil tomorrow entertaining Cambrian and Clydach at the Marston Stadium.

Port Talbot Town have turned their season around and are up to fourth place in the league.

The Steelmen will host Briton Ferry this evening while Goytre host Monmouth Town, also this evening, in a Gwent derby.

Taffs Well are on the road to Cwmbran Celtic tomorrow and Llanelli make up the First Division fixtures with a trip to Undy Athletic.

Aberdare Town get matters underway this evening when they host Abergavenny Town in Division Two.

Llantwit Major are still undefeated in the league and entertain top-of-thetable Caldicot Town tomorrow.

Third-placed Pontypridd Town, who beat Risca United in the Welsh Cup to earn a third-round tie with Haverfordwest County host Dinas Powys, who will do well if they are to get anything from their visit to Treforest.

STM Sports will look to put last week’s cup defeat at Penydarren behind them and Gareth Morgan will want a home success against West End.

Ely Rangers play Caerau tonight at their home ground at Station Road, Wenvoe, to kick off the Division Three fixtures.

Bridgend Street entertain Newport City tomorrow at their Willows Ground, Pontyclun travel to Trefelin while Treharris Athletic host Swansea University.

Trethomas Bluebirds wrap up encounters when they host Chepstow Town.
