Warning to cyclists and walkers after spikes left in ground

-

WALKERS and cyclists have been warned to be alert after large protruding spikes were “clearly maliciously placed” in a popular walking spot.

South Wales Community Mountain Rangers have issued a warning to all dog walkers, hikers, cyclists in the area to beware as there may be more.

Pictures show large spikes, over two inches long, that had been nailed through some wooden board. That board had then been pushed into the mud near on Bwlch mountain near Nantymoel.

Dean Hughes, South Wales Community Mountain Ranger safety officer, said: “The homemade blocks of wood with large nails in them are very dangerous and they can be very hard to see.

“If stood on by a walker they could cause injuries that could even immobilise a child. They are also very dangerous to all wildlife.

“Please be very careful when out walking – look where you are walking.

“We would also advise when out in the woods keep an eye out for similar dangers including barbed wire wrapped around trees at about neck level or cyclist level – they could also cause serious harm also.

“If you see any report it to the authorities and can also let us know by email us at reportit@swcmr.org.uk”

South Wales Police have said that mountain users should be “extra vigilant”.

A spokesman for the force said: “We are aware of the spikes and can confirm that those which were found have been removed.

“However, people using the footpaths should be extra vigilant and report any further incidents immediately to us.

“The spikes have clearly been maliciously placed and they pose a serious threat to the safety to people and animals using the area.

“Somebody knows something and they are urged to contact the Aberkenfig Neighbourhood Policing team immediately via 101 with any information.

“Alternatively they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

This is not the first time that potentially deadly spikes such as this have been found in the area.

In February this year, a 4x4 user got a flat tyre after driving over one of the deadly-looking spikes on Bwlch Mountain. When the driver looked to see what had caused the puncture, he found six 5cm spikes protruding from the snow.

People who use the mountain expressed their outrage on social media. Genevieve Mos said: “What is wrong with these people? They must be really sad and bitter about something. The world obviously hasn’t delivered itself on a platter!”

Rona Davies said: “I can’t imagine someone going to these lengths. Not with livestock about. This would be fatal for a horse. It’s awful.”
