IT’S been billed as Cardiff’s ultimate student house – because it comes with its very own outdoor bar and sauna.

At a time when luxury student apartments have become the latest city trend, one terraced property in the Cathays area is staking its own claim as the perfect place to “study hard and play hard”.

A world away from the kind of student home featured in 1980s sitcom The Young Ones, the property on Treherbert Street has a 42-inch TV with Sky and Virgin Media access while the kitchen contains a dishwasher, tumble dryer and floor-to-ceiling fridge and freezer.

But while many students’ gardens are remembered for their wheelie bins, concrete slabs, weeds and perhaps the odd traffic cone, this one boasts a luxury garden shed with a difference.

A spokesman for James Douglas Sales and Lettings, which is marketing the rental, said: “For those looking to enjoy the social aspect, the rear of this property has been fitted out as Bar Ateen, an indoor and outdoor private covered bar equipped with optics, plastic pint and wine glasses, ice buckets, bar towels and runners, beer mats, fridges, lights, a smoke machine and Bluetooth speakers for those evenings when you want to relax with company.

“One final touch is a private sauna to help steam away your stress.”

The rooms also come with the kind of touches almost unheard of a generation ago, with a hotel-style safe, USB wall sockets and a double bed in each bedroom.

And the tenants at the house, which costs £495 per student per month, are even being offered a welcome party pack, complete with a box of crisps, 24 packets of peanuts and £100 to stock the bar.

The gimmick comes as landlords in traditional student areas of the city face competition from an increase in high-rise student apartments being built in the city centre.

Many of the new flats feature highend extras such as cinemas, party rooms, games rooms, laundries, their own bars and sports studios and gyms.

The landlord of the Treherbert Street property, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “The facilities have been designed to offer a pleasant, relaxing and inspirational environment in a typical homely setting, at a far more economical cost than some of the new student towers, while retaining the cosiness that can only come from living in your own traditional private house and garden.”
