KAY’S CARDIFF SNUB

- CARLY SQUIRES Reporter

COMEDIAN Peter Kay has revealed why he decided to snub Cardiff on his first tour in eight years – because he is waiting for Bristol’s arena to be built.

The Bolton comic, who will go on the road in 2018-19, angered his Welsh fans when he didn’t include the capital city on his list of tour dates.

And they’re not going to be happy with his reason, either.

Kay, who has already faced great demand for more shows, confirmed that he will not perform at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena unless Bristol’s longawaited venue is not built in time.

This is despite the fact the city has been waiting for the 12,000-seat arena for 14 years. It was originally meant to open in 2008, but concerns about its location and overall cost has caused long delays.

The Car Share writer appeared on Absolute Radio on Sunday morning on The Jason Manford Show, and defended the reason behind his decision.

“Can I just explain about Cardiff,” he said. “Now, they’re supposed to be opening a new arena in Bristol which is literally across the bridge and this new arena is gonna be a big ‘un.

“So I’m hanging on, to see if it transpires if there’s an arena – it’s on the cards. That’s what I’m waiting for because Cardiff arena is wonderful and I’ve not ruled it out but the Bristol arena would actually be better.”

Motorpoint Arena currently holds a 5,000 capacity, and will welcome rockers Manic Street Preachers and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in 2018.

The Phoenix Nights funny man will be visiting 11 cities across the UK, with the closest to Cardiff being Birmingham on April, 21 and 22, 2018. Taking place at the Genting Arena, these shows are more than a two-hour drive away.

His last tour in 2010 is officially ranked in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest-selling comedy
