Man, 57, injured in alleged robbery attempt at club

A MAN needed hospital treatment after trying to stop two people “armed with knives” threatening bar staff during an alleged attempted robbery, police have said.

Police are investigating an alleged attempted robbery at Canton Liberal Club at about 10.45pm on Sunday.

“Two individuals armed with knives gained access to the club on Cowbridge Road East and tried to steal money from the till”, a spokesman for South Wales Police said.

“They were confronted by staff and customers and left empty handed.”

The two individuals are believed to be male, police said.

A 57-year-old man suffered a wound to his arm which was treated by paramedics before he was treated at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

Detective Inspector Paul Raikes, from South Wales Police, said: “This was obviously a very frightening experience for everyone present at the club and particularly distressing for the gentleman who was injured trying to stop the two suspects who were threatening bar staff.

“A full investigation is underway. The scene has been forensically examined and we are checking CCTV to identify those responsible for this violent incident.

“It is believed the suspects exited the club onto Alexandra Road.”
