Cardiff cabby came to aid of stricken man

-

A CARDIFF taxi driver has been praised by fellow cabbies after coming to the aid of a man slumped on the pavement in freezing temperatures.

Robin Hollis, 54, said he was driving down Penhill Road in Llandaff in the early hours of Sunday when he spotted the stricken figure – and gave him a free ride home.

“I pulled up to see if he was OK for a start,” Robin said. “My personal opinion was that he must have been for a few drinks and decided to walk home, but he could only make it so far so stopped for a rest.

“He was tired, plus he was freezing cold, so he was in a bit of a state.”

Robin added: “I’m glad I was lucky enough to be driving along the road to be able to help him. If I see anyone I will help them, whatever the circumstances.

“He could have ended up dying of hypothermia; it was that cold.”

The Dragon driver from Riverside has been in the taxi industry for nearly 10 years.

After posting dashcam footage of the incident on social media, colleagues in the industry – tweeting via the Taxi Drivers Cardiff account – described him as “a credit to Cardiff drivers and taxi drivers everywhere”.

Another user, @spirolia73, added: “Could possibly have saved this guy’s life, absolute legend.”

Robin, who featured in the Echo earlier this year after he completed the 86-mile Cardiff Velothon with his dog Scooby on his back, said: “That’s our job. To help the general public and be a good representative for Cardiff, not to turn down fares and that kind of thing.”
