Brand new facilities after being devastated by blaze
A LEISURE centre’s fitness suite which was devastated by fire has been given a revamp.
The suite at Hawthorn Leisure Centre in Pontypridd was destroyed by a huge fire in March, which caused the entire centre to close for a week.
But now brand new facilities have been installed including a new steam room, sauna cabin, rest area and shower and changing facilities.
There has also been a full revamp and refurbishment of the female changing rooms, including new showers being installed and changing cubicles.
The centre, which is open seven days a week, now has a disability access shower and brand new gym studio for individual fitness training and classes.
Rhondda Cynon Taf council paid for the refurbishment.
Cabinet member for environment and leisure Ann Crimmings said: “I am delighted that after the fire earlier this year, we are now able to reopen the new Health Suite at Hawthorn Leisure Centre after substantial investment.
“It is already proving very popular with the public and our Leisure for Life members.
“With over £2m invested recently to improve our leisure centre, the new health suite at Hawthorn Leisure centre further demonstrates our commitment to delivering modern leisure facilities for our residents to enjoy.”
The fire broke out at the centre on March 16.
The building was immediately evacuated and remained closed for a week while power to the building was established and all areas made safe.
The council apologised for the inconvenience.
Parties were relocated and classes and sessions cancelled.
According to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, “large parts of the centre” were affected by the smoke, and the incident also caused the building to lose internet and telephone connection.
