Generous Meirion to be mascot

-

A FOOTBALL-MAD teen whose only Christmas wish is to help homeless people has received a special festive surprise of his own.

As reported last week, when 13-yearold Meirion Timothy was asked to write his Christmas list, all he wanted was to help homeless people – even though he’s had his own share of misfortunes.

So, instead of asking for presents, he asked people to sponsor him to do a charity bike ride to raise funds for the Salvation Army.

He cycled from Nantgarw to Cardiff Bay twice on Sunday.

His mum, Melanie, told how he’s had a tough time of it lately.

Four years ago the family experienced a house fire just before Christmas.

They lost many precious family items, including Meirion’s cherished signed Cardiff City shirt.

But when the story appeared in the Echo and the club found out what had happened, the players decided Meirion deserved a special gift.

As well as getting him a new signed shirt, they asked if he’d like to be the team mascot at Saturday’s game against Hull.

Melanie, 39, said: “I can’t speak about it without bawling my eyes out.

“He was so overwhelmed with the news. He just couldn’t believe that someone had gone out of their way to do something for him.

“He was a bit worried about it at the same time though – he didn’t want people to think he was doing it to get something out of it. “He just wanted to help others. “But he couldn’t believe it – he’s very, very excited.

“His favourite player is Sol Bamba – he even named our puppy after him!”

After the fire, Meirion eventually got over losing his favourite shirt, but a few months later, another disaster hit.

Shortly after the family moved back into their home in Nantgarw the kitchen flooded and they had to move out once more.

And in February 2016 his father, Lance, had a massive stroke.

Although he’s getting better it’s been a tough time for the family – especially for the children.

Melanie added: “He’s back in work now but it’s been tough for the kids. He’s their idol.”

Meirion hoped to raise £200 for charity, but he’s already doubled his target amount.

He will run out at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday following his dedicated work.

The teenager and his family will then watch the Bluebirds take on Hull in the big game.
