Classes moved due to a broken boiler

-

PUPILS at a Cardiff primary have started the term learning at different schools this week because of a broken boiler.

Years three to six at Ysgol y Berllan Deg, on Circle Way East, Llanedeyrn, have been asked to arrive at school as usual and are then being taken to other schools for classes.

Year three pupils are going to Ysgol Peny-Groes in Pentwyn, year four to St Teilo’s High School in Llanedeyrn and years five and six to Ysgol Bro Edern in Penylan.

Only the youngest pupils, from nursery to year two, will be at Ysgol y Berllan Deg as usual. Temporary heaters are being used while the boiler is replaced.

A letter to parents from acting headteacher Angharad Walpole and chair of governors, Emma Lame, says: “Temporary heaters have arrived to heat the ground floor of the school and we are in the process of trying to source alternative hot water supply to the school to enable us to open whilst maintaining the safety and well-being of pupils and staff.

“Although the kitchen will have received a standalone small hot water boiler, it’s possible that there will be changes to the menu for the first weeks.”

The headteacher added: “I have been working in consultation with the board of governors and education authority to develop a contingency plan to ensure there is minimum disruption to teaching and learning over the forthcoming days/ weeks.”

Pupils in years four to six are walking to nearby schools accompanied by teachers, while year three pupils are going to and from Ysgol Pen-y-Groes by bus.

A Cardiff council spokesman said the school is expected to be open as normal on Monday.
