flu cases double in just one week

-

THE number of reported cases of flu by GPs in Wales has more than doubled in a week.

Public Health Wales’ weekly influenza activity in Wales report has found that there were 37.7 GP consultations per 100,000 people from January 1 to 7. That’s more than twice as many as the last seven days of 2017 when there were 16.7 consultations per 100,000.

By comparison, at the peak of the 2016-17 flu season there were just 20 GP consultations per 100,000.

At present the flu outbreak is described as of “medium intensity” but health experts say this week could see GP consultation figures increase once again.

A number of different strains of flu, including Australian flu, are now circulating in Wales.

People in “at-risk” groups, including children, those aged over 65, and people with chronic conditions, are being urged to get themselves vaccinated.

Public Health Wales said those in “at-risk” groups with flu-like symptoms should call their GP surgery or NHS Direct Wales (0845 4647) for advice as soon as the symptoms start, as anti-viral medication may be recommended.

But it added that they should not attend their surgery without calling first, to help reduce the risk of spreading infection to others.
