Nomads too good for the rest on the Wye

- ANGLING LINES

THE six man Cardiff Nomads A team pulled out all the stops to win the latest round of the Wye Winter League at Hereford with a total of 46 section points.

Leading the effort was Geraint Powell with a weight of 60lb 3oz that not only won the upstream section at Belmont but also made him runner up in the match, only beaten by Ludlow team member Steve Deakin with 66lb 4oz from one of the favourite pegs opposite the rowing club.

Martin Challenger, from Cwmbran, also won his section for Nomads with 27lb 14oz and although he weighed in just 5oz Kevin Ellerby added vital points by finishing fourth in a section where hardly anything was caught.

With one match to go the Redditch based Shakespeare team are League leaders with 59 match points and Cardiff Nomads are second with 46.

The New Canal and Match Lake were pegged for the opening match in the White Springs Winter League with the latter providing the top three weights.

Sirhowy AS member Andrew Crocker topped the catches with 71lb of carp caught by pole fishing pellets across to the island; Tredegar Angling Centre team man Danny Baker was runner up with 63lb and another Sirhowy AS member Mikey Williams third with 57lb.

White Springs team member Dan Bowen did best on the New Canal with 52lb and was followed by Ray McDonnell, from Cefn Fforest, with 51lb and the 47lb weighed in by Ben Hicks.

Paul Waddington, from Marshfield, had his first win in the Over-50s matches at Cefn Mably Lakes when his 62lb 7oz of carp was by far the best catch in the first of the year’s Wednesday matches.

Bob Mitchell, the fishery’s angling coach, was second but way behind with 18lb 8oz although he also picked up the silver fish pool money with the 3lb 6oz of roach included in his catch.

Cardiff Nomads member Jimmy Tobin was third with 12lb 8oz.

Alan Davies came from the Rhondda to win the Wednesday open match at Redhill Fishery with a weight of 70lb. He pole fished a couple of yards out from peg 10 on Sophie’s Pond and caught carp on pellet baits.

Mike Yandle, from Tredegar, is rarely out of the prizes and in this match he put himself in second place by netting 50lb of carp to beat Abertysswg angler Mark Williams, with 37lb of carp, into third place.

Sophie’s, Molly’s and Tilley’s ponds were used for the Sunday open at Redhill where the fishing was hard and Aberglais AC member Gary Lewis dealt with the problem best with a winning 44lb of carp from peg 5 on Molly’s.

The better catches were well spread out. Runner up Duane Boyall, from Cefn Fforest, caught his 37lb 6oz from peg 7 on Tilley’s while the third best catch of 32lb 8oz came from Sophie’s peg 16 and was taken by Chris Ponting from Pontymister.

After finishing first and second in the penultimate round of the Mathern Mill Winter Series, Phil Weaver and Sean Wilson are joint leaders with 12 penalty points and Norman Sterry is in third place with 13 points.

This match was on the top lake where Phil Weaver, from Newport, drew peg 14 and caught 96lb of big carp by pole fishing casters in the margins.

Sean Wilson legered maggots to the island for his 71lb of carp while Norman Sterry in third place with 29lb 7oz had 21lb 4oz of roach and bream in that to give him the silver fish pool money.

The 26lb 1oz of carp caught on pole and pellets from peg 60 in the back bay made local angler Dailis Schneider a comfortable winner of the third match in the Newport Winter Series.

His nearest challenger was Risca angler Darrell Barnes who was on the next peg and weighed in 13lb 5oz.
