Driver, 80, dies after river crash

-

AN 80-year-old woman has died after the vehicle she was driving crashed into railings and went into a river.

Emergency services were called to the scene after the crash in Tonyrefail, which is believed to have happened between 1.45pm and 2pm yesterday.

A light blue vehicle, driven by an 80-year-old woman, collided with some railings at the bottom Tylcha Wen Terrace. Police said the vehicle then descended the riverbank and entered a river.

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: “Police officers removed the driver from the vehicle and have been assisted by ambulance and fire service staff.

“Sadly the driver was pronounced deceased shortly afterwards.”

Police said the woman lived locally, and that her next-of-kin have been informed. A specially trained officer is supporting the family.

South Wales Police is appealing for any witnesses to contact them. They would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash, anyone who stopped to provide help, or anyone who may have seen the vehicle prior to the crash who has not yet given their details.

Yesterday evening police said the road remained closed while investigation works were carried out, along with work to recover the vehicle.

A spokeswoman added: “South Wales Police would like to thank the people affected by the closure for their patience and understanding.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the South Wales Police serious collision investigation unit on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting reference number 1800027595.
