BLUES COULD QUIT THE ARMS PARK

- MARCUS HUGHES Reporter marcus.hughes@walesonline.co.uk

CARDIFF Blues last night announced they are considering a move away from their Arms Park home.

The historic ground is owned by Cardiff Athletic Club, with the Blues leasing it under a tenancy agreement which runs until 2022.

The region yesterday said that negotiations with Cardiff Athletic Club had come to an end, with the Blues claiming to have spent a decade trying to negotiate a new deal.

Following a meeting of the Cardiff Blues board yesterday, the decision was made to “redouble efforts” to secure a long-term home with a “fit for purpose” stadium.

A statement said alternative options away from Cardiff Arms Park will now be explored.

It read: “Following 10 years of negotiations, Cardiff Blues have been unable to reach an agreement with Cardiff Athletic Club (CAC) to extend the current lease at Cardiff Arms Park, which expires in four years.

“The board are in agreement that they must future proof Cardiff Blues by exploring alternative options away from Cardiff Arms Park.

“There are a number of exciting opportunities available and the executive have been instructed to take these forward.

“Cardiff Blues would like to thank all parties, who have been involved in the process, for their efforts in trying to reach an amicable agreement but we have a duty of care to secure the future of the company.

“Cardiff Blues will be making no further comments at this time.”

The future of the Blues’ stay at the Arms Park has come under the spotlight in recent years.

The Blues decided to move out of the stadium in 2009, playing at Cardiff City Stadium, but moved back to the Arms Park three years later.

Cardiff Athletic Club has been contacted for a comment in response to Cardiff Blues’ announcement.
