THE Rolling Stones are believed to be preparing to play a huge stadium show in Cardiff this summer, we can reveal.

Although the details have yet to be confirmed, it is understood plans are underway to bring the rock greats to the Principality Stadium as part of a UK tour.

There have been steady rumours for weeks surrounding the possible gig.

The headline concert would mark the band’s return to the stadium which was the scene of their last Cardiff gig as part of the Bigger Bang tour in 2006.

It is understood an announcement will be made within weeks.

The WRU declined to comment when approached yesterday. Any gig would be subject to strict licensing conditions.

The legendary rock group didn’t give their British fans much satisfaction last year after leaving the UK out of their No Filter European tour.

But Stones lead singer Mick Jagger confirmed in a recent interview that the band were lining up a series of shows in the UK and Ireland this summer.

A statement also appeared on the band’s official Facebook account apologising to fans for a lack of UK shows last year while hinting at a tour for 2018.

It is believed the band are lining up the UK tour with early rumours suggesting the dates could include gigs in Dublin, Edinburgh, Manchester, Birmingham, Southampton and London.

Sunderland AFC last week confirmed the club was approached regarding the “possibility” of hosting a Rolling Stones concert at the Stadium of Light, but that the date proposed was unsuitable.

A Sunderland AFC spokesman said: “SAFC was approached about the possibility of holding the concert however, the date proposed would not have allowed enough time to complete pitch renovations ahead of the 201819 season. Both parties explored earlier dates but were unfortunately unable to find a solution.”

The Rolling Stones have performed in Cardiff seven times.

However, technically, they’ve played 12 times as they played two sets on their first five dates in the city between 1963 and 1966.

There was also a concert at Cardiff Castle that was due to take place on September 22, 1973, which was cancelled after councillors were concerned by what happened at the Stones’ violence-married Altamont Concert in the US in 1969.
