Just the job for Bob as bream secures a big victory

IT was flounders all the way for the Penygraig SAC members who fished at Llansteffa­n.

Jason Lewis, from Tonyrefail, took first prize after beaching five; Thomastown angler Neil Gilbert was runner up with four and Penygraig resident Alan Jones third with three.

Competitor­s in the Gwent and District SAC roving competitio­n had a wide choices of places to fish but only managed to catch a few fish over the minimum size limit.

Ivor Smith, from Rogerstone, was the only angler with more than one fish but his winning mixture of four rockling and a sea scorpion still only added up to 0.39kg.

Robert Evans, from Risca, caught one whiting that weighed 0.26kg and one of 0.24kg gave third prize to Barry Owen.

New member Ashley Thompson, from Llandough, started well by winning his first Penarth SAC competitio­n when he fished by the White Wall and reeled in a 2lb 14oz cod.

Simon Tritschler improved on his third place a week ago by taking second prize with a 2lb 3oz conger eel caught from the pier; Ray Starling’s 15oz Ranny Pool pouting took third prize then it was back to the pier where Brendan Davies was fourth with a 7oz whiting.

The RNLI Annual Open takes place at Amroth on Sunday with fishing from 12noon to 4pm and booking in from 10am to 11.30am at The Temple Bar Inn.

The second round of the East Region WFSA Shore League takes place at Marcross and Monknash on Sunday, March 18 when fishing is from 11am to 4pm and the nominated species is pouting. THE fishery’s angling coach Bob Mitchell made a good decision when he decided to target the roach and bream at a chilly over-50s match on Wednesday at Cefn Mably Lakes.

The 18lb of fish in his keepnet not only took first prize, but also gave him the silver fish pool money.

Alan Lewis was runner-up with 10lb 12oz and Newport competitor Phil Rawlings third with 8lb.

Regular winner Mike Yandle had the top weight in a cold Wednesday match on Molly’s Pond at Redhill Fishery.

He fished pellets close in and with a long pole to catch 31lb 2oz of carp.

Arran Williams caught 26lb 2oz of carp for second place, while Graham Davies, from Cefn Coed, was third with 25lb 2oz.

Cefn Fforest AC members cleaned up in the Sunday open at Redhill with Mark Hillier leading the way with 54lb 7oz of carp from Tilly’s Pond.

Duane Boyall’s 51lb 7oz put him in second place, with on-form Bob Giles in the frame again and finishing third with 48lb 12oz.

The top lake at Mathern Mill was cold and clear for the silver fish open match and most anglers struggled for bites.

Newport angler Ian Driscoll and Josh Anderson, who has just moved to South Wales, were on adjacent pegs and much better off fish-wise than the rest of the competitor­s as they were first and second with roach and bream catches weighing 26lb 14oz and 23lb 7oz.

Well behind with 8lb 13oz in third place was Rob Skellett from Cwmbran.

Chris Wells was the winner when the White Springs Winter League reached the halfway mark.

He was on the New Canal and caught 80lb 10oz of carp by pole-fishing pellets across to the edge of the island.

Mike Williams was also on the Canal and runner-up with 70lb 8oz as was his Sirhowy AS clubmate Luke Sorokin in third place with 61lb.

Ian Exall, from Blackwood, did best from those pegged on the Match Lake with 45lb 4oz of bream and carp.

Tredegar angler Adam Mitchell was second with 36lb 4oz and Ron Gibbs, from Caerphilly, third with 25lb 2oz.

Mike Williams and Adam Mitchell are league leaders as both have eight penalty points followed by Chris Wells with 10 points.

Pellets fished under a waggler float accounted for the 72lb 2oz of carp that won the Holgan Farm Open for Derek King.

He was on Match Lake peg 27, while two pegs away, Ian Heaps legered his way to second place with 66lb 12oz and Colin Bates came in third with 31lb 8oz of carp caught on a method feeder.

Retired postman from Fairwater, Robert Michael, delivered the winning weight when the sixth match in the Glamorgan AC winter series took place at Riverside Fishery. He netted a big perch, a few bream and enough roach for a final tally of 12lb 8oz.

Dean Jay, from Dinas Powys, used feeder and maggots for the 11lb 2oz of small bream that put him in second place; two big bream helped Bridgend member Mike Towler to third place with 10lb while Jim Palmer, from Rhiwbina, had a busy day catching the 200 small roach that put him in fourth place with 8lb 5oz.

Rhymney AS was at Port Talbot Docks for the second week and Brian Rees repeated his performanc­e of seven days’ earlier by taking the winning catch.

It was so windy that most members abandoned rods or poles in favour of feeder tackle and Brian used a feeder with maggots as bait to net perch weighing 2lb and 3lb and roach to 1lb for a total weight of 14lb 9oz.
