Smurf chimney is mysterious city landmark on Google Map

-

A RANDOM house in Cardiff has been listed as a historical landmark called The Smurf Chimney – and nobody knows why.

Moira Place in the Adamsdown suburb of the capital appears at first glance to be unremarkable – but a quick Google Map search shows it apparently has one of Cardiff’s most mysterious landmarks.

The symbol used to list the chimney is even the same type used for Cardiff Castle.

The only apparent link to The Smurfs comic is the light blue colour of the chimney.

The property’s resident Stephen Shellard, 65, has lived at the house for around 20 years, but had no idea his house was a “landmark”.

Stephen said: “I have not got a clue why it’s called that.

“The housing association put this blue stuff on it a while ago because it was leaking, maybe that’s got something to do with it.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever heard about it – not a clue to be honest.”

Despite the mysterious origins of the listing, the Smurf Chimney has received five five-star reviews.

The oldest review was posted five months ago, with the latest posted two weeks ago asking “what is this and why is it a thing?”.

Anyone can tell Google about errors on the map, or add a business or public landmark.

A user submits a place name, address and selects a category.

Google or other Google Map users can review the suggestion, which if approved will appear online after an unspecified amount of time.
