Couple reopen pub after sudden closure

-

A CARDIFF couple were so distraught to see their local closing, that they decided to re-open it themselves.

Thackeray, in Rumney, closed in January following an announcement made on the pub’s Twitter account.

It said: “It is with great disappointment that as from today, Tuesday, January 16, 2018, we are closing the restaurant.

“We would like to thank the staff and valued customers for their continued support.”

But, following its sudden closure, the much-loved venue has reopened thanks to the efforts of local couple Karen and James Rees. In just four weeks, the Newport Road venue is now back up and running.

The husband and wife of three years have previously worked for the likes of Brains and the Cross Inn, but this is their first venture managing their own premises.

Both Karen and James want to make it a pub for the people, and so customers are urged to visit and provide suggestions for what they would like to see.

Instead of re-decorating the pub, they have just added a few extra details, including old pictures and books about Rumney.

The menu has had a drastic makeover, with the new selection featuring more traditional comfort food, including faggots and mash and deep-filled pies.

Ingredients are locally sourced, including the meat which comes from Porky’s Family Butchers.

Punters can also expect cask ale, as well as future gin and whisky tasting sessions – featuring the weirdest and most wonderful beverages available.

Thackeray originally opened last year on the former site of The Sir Henry Morgan Pub.

The upmarket restaurant offered food such as scallops, braised Welsh lamb and a Sunday lunch menu.

Its new opening hours are Monday to Thursday, 10am to 11pm; Friday to Saturday, 10am to midnight; and Sunday, 10am to 10.30pm.
