I've changed my life since my diagnosis

-

KATH Bebbington went to see her GP after suffering abnormal bleeding in 2014.

Hospital tests revealed she had womb cancer.

She then underwent surgery to remove her womb, ovaries and cervix.

It’s not known what caused her cancer, but Kath, 57, says: “I was carrying a few extra pounds which may not have helped.

“I remember thinking, 'Am I going to see my grandchildren grow up?'”

The mum of three, from Bolton, was lucky her cancer was detected early, and she didn’t need chemotherapy or radiotherapy. But she vowed to make changes to her life.

“I had no idea about the link between obesity and cancer before I was diagnosed,” she says. “All I associated with being overweight was heart and joint problems, and diabetes.

“Before I didn’t eat enough of the right stuff. I didn’t exercise and snacked on rubbish. Not any more.

“Now I love fruit and veg, I’m power-walking most days or taking the dogs out for a walk.

“Six months after my operation I was taking part in Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. Today I’m back to the same weight I was at 19. I’ve lost four-anda-half stone and I’ve got my BMI right down.

“I can’t say I’ll never get cancer again, or that my weight caused my cancer in the first place, but making changes to my lifestyle has certainly made me feel better. “I hope my story helps others to make changes in their lives.”
