Student flats set to replace restaurant

ONE of the city’s best loved restaurants looks set to be demolished so student flats can be built.

Shaam Nights at 116-118 City Road in Cardiff, regularly features in top charts for restaurants in Cardiff.

But now, Piazza Estate Ltd has asked for permission to knock down the existing building and replace it with student accommodation.

There is a commercial unit included in the new plans but no mention is made of who the tenant would be.

The new building would be three to five storeys and include six so-called “cluster” flats with communal hubs. There would also be a ground-floor foyer, gym and cycle spaces.

Planning officers have said that councillors should approve the plans when they meet on Wednesday. They ask for a contribution of £35,000 from the developer to pay for a better pedestrian crossing and to make the nearby area 20mph.

In an analysis of the plans, the planning officer says that although the proposals effectively add two extra floors “the increase in height is considered to be acceptable to this corner location”.

It adds that the design is also acceptable with a split between brick and render materials.

In documents attached to the planning application, the applicant says no provision for parking is included.

It says the new plans will create a “landmark building”.

No objections have been received to the plans, which will be discussed on Wednesday afternoon.

Conditions to the approval are attached including that there must be storage for 20 cycles and noise assessments.
