Extra bin collections being carried out following snow

-

EXTRA bin collections have been taking place across Cardiff to collect rubbish uncollected due to snow disruption.

After last week’s heavy snowfall, bin collections run by Cardiff council were disrupted. Waste collections from Thursday, March 1, or Friday, March 2, were missed due to bad weather.

The council said staff would try to recollect those items between Monday and Wednesday this week.

But officials said garden would not be collected.

Collections of green recycling bags were also cancelled for everyone on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday so crews could concentrate on general, hygiene and food waste.

But hundreds of people didn’t get the message, leaving green bags piled up across the city.

So extra collections were ordered in the affected areas of Cathays, Butetown, waste Plasnewydd, Caerau, Canton, Gabalfa, Ely, Grangetown and Llandaff.

The council said extra runs were ordered on Thursday night and yesterday. Workers planned to collect “as many bags as possible” according to a council spokesman in a bid to prevent bags being split open and waste littering the streets. Priority was being given to main routes.

One Twitter user raised their concerns with the council. @FarleysRusk said: “#cardiff stinks. Surely @cardiffcouncil you can send the guys out to sort this out. We know you sent messages on social media but clearly the vast majority didn’t see them”

The council responded: “We have now caught up with delayed collections. Where resource allows, we will be collecting any green recycling bags that have been incorrectly put out for cancelled collection this week. Thank you for your patience.”

Scott Bradford said that Cathays was becoming untidy. “Please could you provide an update as to what is being done with the bags of rubbish strewn all over Cathays? No collection for two days and bags now exploding everywhere due to seagulls”.

The council was criticised for not telling enough residents about the changes. A spokesperson said they informed residents through social media, text alerts and local media however they admitted: “We understand that not everyone would be aware of the cancellations this week”.

In response to another user, the council said its crews would be taking part in “mop up” collections at short notice and they wouldn’t be able to tell residents first.

“If resources allow for a mop up collection (for instance is a crew has finished a round early) this would be done at short notice and we would not be able to inform customers in advance. Apologies, collections will be back to normal next week,” a spokesperson explained.

The council said that “as many recycling bags as needed” could be put out for next week’s collections.
