Police called to fight near school

-

POLICE were called after a large fight near a Cardiff high school.

Young children leaving nearby primary schools were left scared and intimidated after the disturbance near Whitchurch High School.

It happened after school on Thursday afternoon in the Wingfield Avenue and Bishop’s Road area of Whitchurch.

Police were called to disperse the large group of youths, some of whom were still in school uniform.

The school has said the reports are “deeply concerning”.

Police confirmed they were called to break up the fight, and that no arrests had been made.

Earlier this year, a gang of youths carrying weapons targeted pupils from the secondary school in a “disturbance” which saw police called to the scene. Then, police patrols around the school at home times were stepped up.

A spokesperson for Whitchurch High School said: “Reports that some students have been involved in an altercation, and that one student was fighting, is deeply concerning.

“The type of behaviour that has been reported does not represent the excellent ethos of the whole school community, and we strongly condemn all forms of violent behaviour.

“We are conducting inquiries alongside those of South Wales Police, and we would ask anyone with information to call 101.”

A local resident said: “It was very intimidating. There were lots of younger children around trying to get home safely and people trying to get past in cars. They would not move out of the road, but went quickly when the police arrived.”

A spokeswoman for the police said: “South Wales Police responded to reports of a disturbance involving a large group of youths in the Bishops Road area of Whitchurch, at around 3.30pm on Thursday.”
