Man threatened card players with knife after row

-

A MAN who had been playing cards with friends in a Conservative club threatened them with a kitchen knife after a row when he accused them of cheating.

Carter Wiseman, 26, was at the Cadoxton Conservative Club in Barry on February 5 at about 8pm when he got into an argument while playing cards with friends, Cardiff Crown Court heard on Tuesday.

Wiseman, who had drunk about five pints of beer, played cards until about 10.45pm before he started accusing others of cheating.

He then left the club and went home.

But he decided to return to the club at about 11.30pm brandishing a kitchen knife.

He was disarmed and escorted from the building but kicked a glass panel from a fire door, causing £150 of damage.

It left one victim “shocked and petrified” about the possibility the defendant would have stabbed him, prosecutor Nik Strobl said.

Before he re-entered the club he had messaged his cousin saying he intended to return with a knife, the court heard.

The prosecution said he wanted the victim to “fear for his safety”, adding there had been “significant planning” to “cause fear”.

The incident was captured on CCTV in the club.

Wiseman has five previous convictions for five offences.

He pleaded guilty to charges of affray, criminal damage and possession of a weapon, namely a kitchen knife.

Wiseman, of Burlington Street, Barry, was sentenced to a total of 10 months in prison for affray and possession of a bladed article in a public place.

No further action was taken about the criminal damage.

Judge Michael Fitton QC told the defendant: “After a not very significant argument you went home under the influence of five pints of alcohol.

“You came into the club and there you produced a knife, which no doubt caused significant fear.

“I am deeply troubled by you and what is going on in your head.

“If you don’t sort yourself out you’ll end up spending a lot longer in prison.”
