Sun shines for Cardiff Bay runners

-

THE sun came out for thousands of runners who took part in yesterday’s Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run.

More than 5,000 participants of all ages and abilities, many of them in fancy dress costume, took part in a 2km family fun run and a 10km race around one of the flattest courses in the UK.

Starting in the heart of the Bay, the route passed the iconic Wales Millennium Centre, Pierhead Building, Senedd and Porth Teigr before looping around the Cardiff Bay Barrage and Norwegian Church ahead of a grandstand finish in the Roald Dahl Plass.

The Runners’ Village opened at 9am and the fun run started at 10am, before the main event got underway at 11am.

Charlie Hulson made the most of the sunshine in the Welsh capital to lead home the field to take the tape in 29:32. Hulson was able to break clear at 8km to hold off Cardiff AAC’s Matt Clowes to win by five seconds while 2012 Olympian Scott Overall was third in 29:48.

“There were a few twist and turns, but it was a really nice course. I didn’t feel amazing, but I enjoyed it,” said Hulson.

“I’m in a big block of training and I won’t be tapering until the summer. Scott gave it a really good go for 7km and that made it a good race.”

The women’s race was won in a course record time of 33:42 by Bristol & West AC runner Eleanor Davis, who ran 14 seconds faster than ever before.

Davis said: “It felt great out there. It was the perfect day, perfect weather and I got a PB, so it couldn’t have been any better.”

BBC weather presenter Sue Charles started the family fun run before running the 10K race.

Hundreds of runners turned out once again to raise money for official charity partner The Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

The race is part of the Run4Wales 10k series, with the next one in Newport at the end of April.

“It was another magnificent day for the city of Cardiff with a fantastic turnout. This event now sits alongside the Cardiff Half Marathon as one of the Welsh capital’s premier sporting events,” said Run4Wales chairman Nigel Roberts.
