She also recounts an experience en route to the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.

Boris Johnson, Alex Salmond, Tessa Jowell, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Ed Miliband and the Joneses were on the same bus heading to the Olympic Park, but the driver got lost.

“It was almost 8pm and the ceremony was about to start and that’s where we were circling the stadium.

“We were able to see the Orbit Tower in the stadium getting closer and closer, but then got further and further away.

“Boris was trying to be funny and not get agitated.

“But he was angry with someone on the phone and told everyone “do not tweet, do not tweet!”. We arrived at the ceremony just in time for it to start.

“It was just like a scene from the BBC’s comedy programme, 2012, and I really expected to see the actor Hugh Bonneville coming on the bus any minute.”

Mrs Jones also spoke about her husband being a “romantic person” and has organised a trip for the couple to return to Iceland, where they got engaged 25 years ago.

“I’m looking forward to going back and reliving the experience.

“I think he needs time now to look after himself and to have the right balance between life and work and that we have more time to do things as a family.” I had no idea
