Man who died after stabbing was ‘good hearted’

-

A 20-YEAR-OLD Cardiffian who died after a stabbing in Liverpool city centre may have been targeted following an earlier street altercation, police believe.

Fatah Warsame, from the Canton area of the capital, was fatally attacked in Hanover Street at around 4am on Sunday, with police confirming he died from a single knife wound to his chest.

Friends and representatives from Mr Warsame’s former school yesterday paid tribute to Mr Warsame, who was rushed to hospital after the attack, describing him as a “good-hearted” young man.

Mr Warsame, whose death is believed to have been the fifth fatal stabbing on Merseyside this year, was a former pupil of Fitzalan High School, as well as briefly attending Cathays High School.

In a statement, a spokesman for Fitzalan High School said: “Fatah will be fondly remembered and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

A spokesman for Cathays High School also extended their condolences to Mr Warsame’s family.

Mudassar Khan, a friend from Mr Warsame’s time at Cathays High, said: “He was a very lively and goodhearted individual, always full of energy and making people laugh.

“If for some reason I would arrive late to tutorial lessons he would say to me: ‘I imitated your voice and the teacher marked you in because of it.’”

Police revealed on Monday that a post-mortem examination had been carried out, confirming Mr Warsame died from one knife wound.

Yesterday detectives said they were investigating whether the fatal knifing was connected to an earlier altercation near nightspot Popland, in Slater Street the heart of Liverpool’s clubbing district, which occurred at around 3.30am.

At that point, police believe, two friends who had been with Mr Warsame ran off.

He then ended up in Hanover Street where he was punched as well as being fatally stabbed.

An off-duty nurse saw him lying bleeding in the street and gave him emergency first aid until an ambulance arrived on the scene.

Mr Warsame had known friends and connections in Liverpool and this was not his first trip to Merseyside, detectives said.

He and some friends had watched the Tony Bellew v David Haye boxing rematch before heading in to the city centre to enjoy a night of socialising and drinking.

Police today said they had no description of Mr Warsame’s attackers except that they were black and wearing dark clothing.

Mr Warsame lived in Cardiff and has Somali parents who still live in the African nation but had an older brother who has been up to Merseyside since his sibling’s tragic death.

His relatives have been informed and they were described as “devastated” by his death.

Arrests are yet to be made over Mr Warsame’s murder and the murder weapon has not been located.

Mr Warsame had no significant or extensive criminal record that would be relevant to the inquiry, police added.

Mr Warsame’s two friends have given extensive statements to detectives and are cooperating fully with the murder investigation.
