Family runs 50 miles in memory of chef Jack

-

THE family of a chef from Cardiff who was killed in a crash with a car while out cycling has run a gruelling 50 miles to raise money for a charity set up in his name.

Former serviceman Jack Berry died at the scene of the crash on the A48 between the Cowbridge bypass and Pentre Meyrick on October 28 last year.

The 26-year-old was a chef at the Bush Inn in St Hilary, near Cowbridge, and at the time of the crash was cycling with other people from the pub.

On Sunday, his widow Luisa as well as his father, uncle, brother and colleagues ran all the way from the family home in Abergavenny to the pub where he worked – on one of the hottest days of the year.

All of the money raised is for the Jack Berry Fijian Foundation, which is building a school for a village on the Pacific island.

Elizabeth Silva, 47, is the owner of the pub and offered up a hog roast for the heroic athletes.

“The arrived about 5.15pm after they had set off at 4am,” she said.

“They did really well and were making great progress but then the heat came on at mile 35.

“Lots of the village came out to cheer them on for the last part.

“They were a bit worse for wear but were on top form.

“It was so hot but they stayed together all the way.”

Jack, who grew up in Abercarn and went to Cwmcarn High School along with his younger brother Charlie, had given up a £50,000-a-year job as a financial contractor to work as a chef to pursue his dream of running his own restaurant.

According to Elizabeth, more than £800 was raised by the run.
