Memorial to Cardiff man who died in Liverpool stabbing

-

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Cardiff man who was fatally stabbed in Liverpool, with hundreds of people turning up to a memorial event.

Fatah Warsame, 20, from Canton, was attacked in the Merseyside city on May 6 and later died from a single stab wound to his chest.

Officers investigating his killing said Mr Warsame had watched the Tony Bellew v David Haye boxing rematch before heading into Liverpool city centre.

Around 30 minutes later, Mr Warsame ended up on Hanover Street where he was stabbed at around 4am.

An off-duty nurse saw Mr Warsame and gave him first aid until an ambulance arrived. He was taken to hospital, and two friends went with him, but Mr Warsame later died from his injuries.

Merseyside Police have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of murder who has been released under investigation, while four people arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have also been released under investigation.

On Sunday, friends and family of Mr Warsame held an Iftar event in his memory at the Butetown Pavilion in Cardiff which was attended by hundreds of people.

The main message of the event was to tell young people not to carry knives and to warn of the dangers of doing so.

Speaking to ITV Wales, Mr Warsame’s nephew Muktaar Farhan said he meant a lot of to everyone who knew him.

He added: “I want to share with the kids (that) they have a future. If they ever carry a knife or anyone carries a knife, there’s no need to do that.

“We’ve done this event to share how we feel as a family because we lost a valuable man - he means a lot to me.”

The event was also held to raise money for charity, with more than £3,000 raised so far.

Mr Warsame’s family are hoping to build a well in Somaliland in his memory, so families in the area can have access to clean and safe water.

The family said: “We know Fatah will never return, but through charity in his name, we can find a little comfort.

“Please do support the cause which will transform and save countless of lives.”

Detectives investigating Mr Warsame’s death said he had friends and connections in Liverpool.

Detective Chief Superintendent Chris Green said: “We know he [Mr Warsame] has links to Liverpool, and he has friends and associates in Liverpool.

“We believe they were watching the boxing. They then went into the city centre and we know there was an altercation, or some sort of fracas, outside Popland on Slater Street, at about 3.30am.

“We are making an appeal for anyone who was in that vicinity who saw a disturbance or a group of males to come forward.

“We then know, 30 minutes later, just further down towards the direction of Hanover Street at the junction of Wood Street and Roe Alley, Fatah was involved in an incident.

“We are appealing for anyone [to come forward] - we know there were a number of people in that area.”
