TRIBUTES ‘Ian’s kindness and generosity were legendary’

-

A MUCH-RESPECTED businessman whose company brought a touch of Christmas sparkle to South Wales has been remembered for his intelligence and kindness.

Tribute has been paid to Talbot Green businessman Ian Chaney following his death at the age of 70.

Growing up, Ian attended Barry Comprehensive School before going on to study at Barry Grammar School.

It was during this time that his interest in rugby took hold while playing for the school team – a passion which continued throughout his life.

A keen entrepreneur, Ian started work for a company called Wessex after school, working his way up to the position of manager at the age of 20.

Keen to start a business of his own, it was not long before he and a partner set up a company in Litchard, Bridgend, before the Welshman moved on to start his own venture called Floodlighting and Electrical Services.

The company, which installs floodlights for all sports grounds with a focus on rugby, earned the businessman a reputation in the industry for his professionalism and high standards.

Known as a “force to be reckoned with”, Ian’s success saw him advise governing bodies and organisations across the country including Sports Wales, WRU, FAW and various councils and authorities.

Meanwhile, other jobs for the company included installing the annual Christmas lights in Cardiff and other towns with the help of his loyal team of staff members of more than 25 years.

Away from the sports pitch, Ian’s main love was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He particularly loved Christmas and would spend time and effort to make sure everyone enjoyed gifts and surprises.

Ian’s kindness and generosity towards the staff at work and his family have been described as “legendary”, accompanied by a love of parties and organising get-togethers.

At the age of 41 Ian met his wife Carole at a dinner party at Miskin Manor Hotel. The pair shared an instant connection and married a few years later in Gretna Green in May 1997.

For more than 20 years Carole and Ian enjoyed a perfect marriage.

He will be sorely missed by his grandchildren Luke, Jake, Poppy and India as well as stepchildren Karla and Rachel and his beloved wife Carole.

Ian died on March 23. His funeral was held on April 16 at Thornhill Crematorium.
