CATCH and release fishing has ended for the summer so anglers must now stop fishing once they reach the number of fish covered by their day ticket.

Dry flies like grey duster, black gnat and various sedges are tempting surface feeding trout; but it is necessary to keep switching patterns and Gerwyn Mathias had got around to a blue fritz when set the hook into a 7.25lb rainbow. Hywel Jones also banked a 7.25lb rainbow but his fish came to a hare’s ear nymph. Geraint Morgan bagged four fish weighing 13.25lb when he cast a hot head damsel nymph; an emerger pattern was responsible for the three adding up to 10.5lb caught by Rory Matthews and Jay Williams used a black nymph for his three fish 9.75lb bag.

MICK Payne’s visit to the Redbrook pools paid off handsomely when he banked one of the tagged trout that weighed 4.5lb and put £200 into his wallet.

Robin Vale reached the 10 fish catch and release limit and among the fish was a 7.5lb rainbow that was caught on a dry black gnat.

Carl Williams also reached the 10 fish limit and again his best was a 7.5lb rainbow that fell for a cat’s whisker lure.

Andy Rawlings, from Griffithstown, used a dragon fly larva pattern to good effect when it brought him a hard fighting 7lb blue trout.

Shaun Bailey’s limit was taken on a mixture egg flies and buzzers while Paul Ellsworthy caught his 10 trout on buzzers and blue flash damsel patterns.

Kasidit Leoviriyakit returned 10 rainbows and his seven-year-old son Wilbur caught two and limit catches were also taken by Steve Mogg with rainbows to 3lb and Paul Hadfield who caught his on yellow and black buzzers. Tony Talbot came from Cardiff to catch and release eight rainbows and the same number were returned by Paul Santini, Phil Roe and George Dickman.

John Burton cast a cat’s whisker lure for the six fish he put back as did Richard Williams, Mick Smith and Luke Bradley. John Butterworth returned the three fish he caught but Russell Bailey had cooking in mind and kept his three weighing 5.5lb and three fish 5.75lb bags went away with Paul Huxley, Alan Thomas, George Parfitt, Kim Boland, Tom Edwards and Leo Jenkins.

TWO years ago former Welsh Fly Fishing International Ken Bowring, from Ely, lost a fly rod that had been built for him when a fish dragged it into the bottom pond after he had laid it on the bank while he helped out a neighbouring angler to net a fish.

All efforts to retrieve it using boats failed-but this week Ken and his rod are reunited after fellow Newport Reservoirs Fly Fishing Association member Adrian Moyse found it

attached to his boat anchor. The rod was dirty but undamaged and the Hardy fly reel was in good order as was the Cortland fly line. Ken cleaned up the rod, replaced the backing line and came back to put it to good use with a bottom pond limit and also proved it was as good as before the time under water by catching a further eight when he fished the top pond later in the week. Ken Pascoe didn’t have any unusual catches when he was out on a boat but he did use a grey nymph to reach the catch and release limit.

Craig Bowles and Colin Poole also boated eight rainbows while John Eynon returned four and Martin Rees boated three. Paul Jennings caught seven fish when he cast a damsel nymph from the bank and hoppers worked for Brian Green with six. Two visits by Wynne Jones produced seven rainbows; Alan Rees netted four while three were caught by Shaun Cotterell, Bernard Stephens, Terry O’Connor, Gethin Bowes and Bob Cook. Geoff Evans had a 3lb 10oz rainbow in his catch and Bernard Hartland’s biggest weighed just one ounce less. Among those with a brace of fish were Steve Curtis, Alun Paul and Dean Connelly. On the top pond Colin Jones, Chris Norville and Andrew Bann all managed eight fish limits while six came to the net for Gwyn Davies, Kevin Pinkney and new Association member Clive Norville. Damsel nymphs and Diawl Bach flies worked for Stewart Gordon and day ticket visitor M Till as both banked four and Gareth West, Martin Rees and Brian Wareham with three apiece.

CARDIFF Reservoirs Fly Fishing Club member Keith Higgins had a good day as he switched between buzzers and nymphs and caught and released 14 rainbows and the same number was returned by Steve Beunbage spread over two visits. Peter Tomas Amos and John Tyrell fished together for a combined 16 trout total while Roger Thomas and his son Mike totalled 13 rainbow trouts. Small nymphs worked for Alan Staniforth as he netted and released 10 rainbows and the same number was achieved by Dennis Holder using buzzers. Dave Keats and grandson Ben had a combined nine fish catch while Philip Webb and Michael Buckingham both matched that and eight fell to Richard Greenhough’s rod.
