Invitation to party during Eisteddfod
PEOPLE across the nation have been invited to a massive night-time Cardiff carnival – as part of the capital’s Eisteddfod celebrations.
The National Eisteddfod – one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world – arrives in the city this August.
And as part of the celebrations, Cardiff’s vibrant Butetown Carnival and the Eisteddfod are inviting communities and organisations from all over Wales to come and party on the streets of Cardiff Bay.
The event aims to celebrate the energy, strength and diversity of Welsh cultural life in Cardiff, across the country and its links across the world.
Carnifal y Môr (Carnival of the Sea) takes place at 10.30pm on Saturday, August 4.
It will process and dance through the main festival site – the Eisteddfod Maes – down to the waterside in front of the Senedd.
There, a film by the artist Megan Broadmeadow will be projected onto large waterscreens with a contribution by Welsh musician, Super Furry Animals frontman and filmmaker Gruff Rhys.
Ashok Ahir, chair of the Cardiff executive committee for this year’s Eisteddfod, said: “This year’s Eisteddfod is a festival with a difference, open and welcome to all, giving people whatever their background a chance to see the very best of what our nation has to offer.
“Nothing epitomises this more than Carnifal y Môr, which will take place on the waterfront that was the landing point for many people whose descendants now call Cardiff and Wales home.
“This carnival will be a celebration of all our cultures, alongside our shared Welsh language heritage, a heritage that has shaped this land and continues to thrive in communities from Cardiff Bay to Caernarfon Bay.”
Communities, groups, organisations and individuals are welcome to take part to celebrate who they are and the things they love about living in Wales.
An Eisteddfod spokeswoman said: “Find out more about joining this big invitation to create a carnival on the Eisteddfod website, www.eisteddfod. wales/the-maes/places-maes/carnifal-ymor.
“And get in touch to find out more, either by emailing carnifal@eisteddfod. org.uk or ringing 0845 4090 300.”
The project has received funding via the Visit Wales Tourism Product Innovation Fund to celebrate the Year of the Sea.
This year’s Eisteddfod will be held in Cardiff Bay from August 3 to August 11.
