Athletes descend on Bay as triathlon ‘among biggest yet’

ATHLETES descended on Cardiff Bay for the city’s triathlon yesterday.

Organisers said the race is going from strength to strength and this year’s was among the biggest yet.

Held in Cardiff Bay, the triathlon is one of the most memorable city races on the calendar.

Those who braved the gruelling event had an early start with a swim in the Bay, followed by a fast cycle route along closed roads.

The triathlon was rounded off with a spectacula­r run along the Cardiff Bay barrage.

Winner of the triathlon in the Olympic Women section, in 2.01.17, Vicky Johnson, said: “It was really good fun, there were so many specatator­s out on the course and the course was flat which suited me.”

Coming in second place was Camillia King of Wise Coaching with a time of 2.08.57; and third was Katie Greenwood of Cardiff Triathlete­s with a time of 2.09.47.

Winner in the Olympic male section was Alex Machett of Pembrokesh­ire Triathlon Club with a time of 1.47.44.

Second was Nathan Ford of Team Trendz, 1.51.51, and third was James Manson of Cardiff Triathlete­s with a time of 1.58.45.

While in the elite male sprint event Adam Jelf was first with a time of 1.02.56. Second was Oliver Beere of Cardiff’s Cr@ptri triathlon club who finished in 1.04.51; and third was John Tredgett of RAF Triathlon with a time of 1.05.23.

The elite female section saw Laura John of ASC Konstanz finish first with a time of 1.07.07, with Rachel Dodsworth second in 1.12.21 and Jane Eaton third in 1.15.54. The athletes leave the water to collect their racing bikes at the Oval Basin during the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay Run
