Hero volunteer rewarded for collecting park litter
HE’S the volunteer hero who works tirelessly to make our brilliant capital city look a little better each day.
Richard Duncan has spent an hour and a half of each day for the past 12 years picking litter at one of Cardiff’s flagship parks.
That’s the equivalent of nine months of solid work to make Llandaff Fields a better place.
And now the selfless retired plumbing and electrical company worker has been rewarded for his efforts.
Richard, who lives on Conway Road near Llandaff Fields, said his daily rubbish haul usually amounts to a trolley full of recycling items, alongside one or two bin bags full of other waste.
“Keeping the fields clean is very satisfying, and since my retirement I have been able to devote more time to it,” he said. “That said, I would be very glad if people would take their litter home with them rather than dropping it in our parks.”
To thank him for his fantastic efforts, staff and volunteers at Llandaff Fields Hub have given Richard a framed print by late local artist Charles Byrd who died earlier this year aged 101.
The piece depicts Llandaff Fields during the Second World War when it was used as an allotment for growing vegetables to help with the war effort.
Llandaff Fields Hub chair Nerys Lloyd-Pierce said: “Everyone loves Llandaff Fields, and the reason all park users can enjoy the Fields litter-free is largely thanks to Richard’s daily work collecting waste and recycling.
“We are very grateful to him for his selfless public spirited actions, and are delighted to have the opportunity to thank him.”
