Litter complaints

VISITORS to a flagship South Wales beauty spot have complained about the “awful” amount of litter left there after last weekend.

Joanne Godding took photos of an overflowing bin near the pebble beach at Porthkerry Country Park, in Barry.

Rubbish such as plastic and food containers was spilling out of the bin and strewn across the grass when Mrs Godding and husband Paul visited the park on Monday, during the current hot spell.

And plastic waste and rubbish was also seen on the beach on Sunday as people flocked to the park to enjoy the warm weather.

Paul, from Monmouthshire, said: “It’s just awful considering the park is absolutely gorgeous. It just looks awful for a visitor like myself.

“I know people should take rubbish home with them, but there should be more bins, or at least people cleaning up the bins at a more regular time than they have.”

The council said it is planning extra provision to cope with waste at its country parks over the summer months.

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesperson said: “Last weekend’s warm weather saw huge numbers visit Porthkerry Park and naturally this means more rubbish to dispose of.

“Additional wheelie bins were placed at Cosmeston and Porthkerry and a member of staff is based at each on Saturday and Sunday specifically to manage the litter.

“There is also a refuse vehicle on duty to empty these wheelie bins and others at locations like Barry Island and Cosmeston.

“Unfortunately, demand meant some of the bins reached capacity before they were emptied, but this issue has been addressed and waste disposed of.

“During the school holiday period, a member of staff will also be at Cosmeston and Porthkerry between Monday to Friday due to the potential for larger amounts of litter.”
