RHYMNEY AS Secretary Jesse Pugh couldn’t fish the full four hours of the club’s match at Fochriw Feeder Pond as he had to leave early to join his wife for a church, function but he still managed to catch more than the other members managed in the extra time.

Concentrating where the water dropped off to 10ft and using a rod and reel with maggots as bait he put together a mixture of small bream, rudd, roach and perch that turned the scales to 7lb 4oz.

Terry Moss only needed one fish to take second prize and that was a 3lb 4oz bream caught on feeder and maggots while a small fish catch weighing 1lb 1oz put Jason Breen in third place.

Cardiff angler Steve Ayres paid a successful visit to a match at Somerset’s Viaduct Fishery where he fished his way to first place with 104lb 13oz of carp. Also in Somerset was Phil Weaver, from Newport, who headed for Acorn Fishery and returned with the runner up prize money in his pocket after finishing second with 175lb 6oz of carp.

Maggots as bait and pellets to attract the fish was the winning tactics used by Newport member Dave Turberville when he took part in the Sirhowy AS match on Penny’s Pond at Redhill Fishery.

He caught carp, bream and roach and the whole lot added up to 143lb 11oz.

Tredegar tackle dealer Mark Jones kept up his good run as runner up with 107lb 7oz of carp on pellet baits while sweetcorn was used by Duane Boyal, from Monmouth, to take the third best weight of 92lb 10oz and by Mike Yandle in fourth place with 90lb 15oz.

Although he didn’t frame in this match Nigel Morris is still top of the Club Champion points table with 16 points more than his nearest rival.

The Merthyr Tydfil AA match at Redhill was a disappointment for everyone except Mark Sweeney who was way ahead with 65lb 12oz as Rhys Evans and Dave Couzens behind with 10lb and 8lb 5oz.

Cefn Fforest AC has held three evening matches on the canal at Newbridge and Rob Wiltshire has won them all and in the latest his 20lb catch of carp was double the next best weight.

The club’s weekend fixture was at Mathern Mill where Howard Green baited with maggots and landed carp to 12lb as he won yet again with 136lb 3oz.

Lyn Jones, from Cefn Hengoed, finished second with 125lb 14oz and Pontllanfraith angler Ian Exall third with 85lb.

Pontllanfraith tackle shop owner Green had already added another win in the Wednesday match at Redhill when he netted 183lb 14oz of carp from peg 18 to beat David Turberville with 150lb and Cardiff angler Steve Ayres making a return to the match circuit in third place with 88lb 13oz.

Cwmbran and Cardiff anglers took all the prize money from the Wednesday Over-50s match at Cefn Mably Lakes.

Martin Challenger won for Cwmbran with 135lb 12oz and was backed up by Bill Gronow in third place with 81lb and section winner Carlo Bertorelli trailed with 77lb 12oz.

Mick Fraser headed the Cardiff collection with 95lb 10oz and second place while James Smithson won the other section with 68lb 12oz.

Claire Giddy, from Barry, showed the men how to fish when she overcame a hard day on the Match Lake at White Springs and caught 52lb of carp to win the Glamorgan AC match.

Russell Palmer, from Rhiwbina, had the next best weight of 50lb 2oz with another Cardiff member Dave Pike in third place with 47lb 1oz.

There were familiar names at the top of the result sheet after the Wednesday open on the Pleasure Lake at White Springs.

Winner Chris Wells netted 131lb 12oz of carp and bream; Alan Godrich had mainly carp in his 120lb 6oz and Dan Bowen was third with 66lb 14oz.

The Saturday result on the New Canal had one new name as Chris Hall weighed in 85lb 4oz for second place; but the winner was Dan Bowen with 92lb 2oz and Chris Wells was third this time with 69lb 12oz.

Cwmcelyn AC chose the Match Lake at White Springs for the club fixture and it certainly suited Blaina member Scott Worton who pole fished pellets and ended the match with 82lb 6oz of carp.

Ross Townley came in second with 77lb 8oz and Andrew Mann third with 71lb 2oz.

Four members had over 100lb of carp to weigh in at the end of the Aberglais AC match on Sophie’s Pond at Redhill Fishery and top of the list was
