School’s policy changes after uniforms row

-

STAFF at a Cardiff school have relaxed the uniform policy as the heatwave continues.

Cardiff High School came under criticism last week for making girls wear tights as temperatures rose to 30°C.

But over the weekend parents have been told that today will be a free non-uniform day because of the weather conditions.

Headteacher Stephen Jones said: “Following an inspection of the school today (Saturday) the inside temperature of the building has increased as a result of the ongoing weather conditions over the last week and weekend.

“As a result of this, coupled with the predicted peak summer temperature in Cardiff on Monday, the decision has been made to hold a free non-uniform day on Monday, July 2.

“As in all events of extreme weather, we would ask you to please monitor our website and social media during the course of Monday for further updates relating to the remainder of the week.”

Last week, headteachers were urged to relax rules on school uniforms in the heatwave conditions.

Parents at many schools complained they are too strict with uniform policies, banning boys from wearing shorts and telling girls to wear skirts or trousers.

At Cyfarthfa High School in Merthyr Tydfil, a group of boys wore skirts in protest at not being allowed to wear shorts.

After some rain in south Wales on Sunday afternoon, the heatwave looks set to continue this week.

Channel 4 weather forecaster Liam Dutton says: “The UK heatwave will carry on, with a few subtle changes.

“However, there will be a mix of clouds and sunshine, rather than clear blue sky. There is a chance of a few showers but no rain for most.

“Getting above 30°C is less likely as the week goes on, but UV and pollen levels remain very high.”
