Green for go as Howard’s way proves to be the winning one

- WITH RON COUSINS

AFTER winning last week, Howard Green, from Pontllanfraith, did it again after drawing peg 1 for the Wednesday open match at Redhill Fishery on Molly’s Pond.

Fishing in the margins with paste as bait and pellets to attract the fish he caught carp steadily to end the match with 163lb 7oz. That almost doubled the 87lb 7oz that put Norman Sterry in second place while 60lb 1oz gave Cardiff angler Steve Ayres third place.

Cwmbran anglers claimed the pool money in the Over-50s Wednesday fixture at Cefn Mably Lakes.

Martin Challenger won again at the venue with 169lb of carp and was followed by Dave Jones with 132lb 12oz and Neil Dibble with 130lb 12oz.

There was only a small entry for the weekday open at Mathern Mill where Norman Sterry was the winner with carp between 5lb and 12lb in a total weight of 115lb.

Pellet baits legered close to the island was the way the top two caught their fish when Sirhowy AS held a match at Mathern Mill. Carp into double figures made the weights and the best effort was 132lb 7oz from Rob Dyer.

Gary Charles, from Cardiff, had 114lb 2oz to weigh in and then it was Newport members Phil Rawlings and Matt Jackson who both baited with sweetcorn for catches that weighed 78lb 2oz and 73lb.

There was a family touch to the Spencer Works AC match on the bottom lake at Mathern Mill as Newport member Les Turberville legered pellets close to the island where carp to 13lb made a meal of them and gave him the top weight of 156lb and his son David fished the same way for the second best 96lb. Alan Davies, from Trealaw, was third with 80lb.

Jesse Pugh made it two wins in a row at Fochriw Feeder Pond when he topped the Rhymney AS line up with 5lb 5oz. Club secretary Pugh fished as he did the previous week with rod, reel and maggots and made his weight with small roach, rudd and bream.

Elwyn Parfitt is still a match fishing force in his 80s and proved it once again by taking second place with 2lb 2oz and beating next peg neighbour Brian Rees with one ounce less in to third place.

A 13lb carp and five good sized bream all with a taste for maggots and casters made up Steve Hughes’s winning 34lb in the New City Anglers match at Lliswerry Pond. Runner-up Dave Wells caught four tench and three eels weighing 13lb 14oz and Craig Summerhill was third with 12lb 8oz.

Fishery owner Ian Heaps showed the form that made him World Champion back in the 1970s when he won the open match at his Holgan Farm Fishery with a net busting 290lb of carp caught on red maggots pole fished over groundbait. John Latzio’s 188lb was the next best while in third place with 137lb was Colin Bates.

The charity open match in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support at Cefn Mably Lakes was well supported and won by Pontymister AC member Kevin Mellish, from Cross Keys, who netted 93lb 6oz of carp using pellet baits in the Match Lake.

Gareth Gronow, from Cwmbran, claimed second place with 83lb 4oz and Nick Bevan was third with 70lb.

Odd Bream decided the result of the Forest Open as fish were hard to tempt on a blazing hot day at Steam Mills Lake. Mark Annis was the winner with 9lb 11oz and after him came Wayne Pearle with 5lb 10oz and Bernie Frazer with 4lb 10oz.

The Tuesday evening series of River Taff matches sponsored by Anglers Supplies can be entered at the 5pm draw at Penarth Road Bridge.

The second match in the Newport AA Summer Series is on Sunday at School Pool and can be entered at 8.30am before fishing from 10am to 3pm.
