Robert reels in winning mullet

-

GWENT and District SAC started the weekend at Cardiff foreshore where Robert Evans’ 2.20kg mullet was a winner and beat Dave Loader with a 2.14kg conger and Neil Evans with 0.75kg.

The second outing was to Marcross where Cardiff member Mike Mather was the winner after beaching and returning 15 smooth hounds. Runner-up Craig Maddox caught four smooth hounds, four dogfish and a ray, while four smooth hounds put Martin Jones in third place.

The club’s other fixture at Aberthaw was won by Ivor Smith, from Rogerstone, who beached a conger that weighed 0.51kg. Craig Maddox was second again with a wrasse and a rockling weighing 0.29kg and Hugh Jones third with a 0.14kg rockling.

The Newport and District SAC King of the River at Coronation Park was for the club’s juniors and this year the crown went to Alys Hart, who reeled in a 0.73kg conger.

There were prizes for all the youngsters taking part and runner-up was Nathan Guscott with a 0.25kg conger, while Mario Francis claimed third prize with a 0.12kg flounder that was the first fish he had ever caught.

The adults found it equally difficult to catch fish on a hot day with no breeze and their best effort came from Justin New, who managed to catch two congers with a total weight of 1.10kg.

Richard Rogers, fishing alongside, beached one weighing 0.50kg and a 0.11kg silver eel gave third to Dave Leader.

The club fish at Redwick from 11am to 5pm tomorrow following booking-in at 10am at Redbrook Community Centre.

Smooth hounds livened up the Penarth SAC competition for those members who fished at Ranny Pool, where Adam James completed a hattrick of wins with three and a total weight of 34lb 15oz. Ray Starling caught two for 16lb 14oz and second place ahead of Fred Chick, with one weighing 11lb 4oz, and Brian Lewis, who also caught one for his 10lb 4oz.

It was a bass that decided the result of the club’s second competition. Weighing 7lb it was caught at Ranny Pool by Dave Pilcher and immediately safely returned to the sea.

Neil Hatton’s second-best 5lb 15oz conger came from the promenade as did the one weighing 2lb 5oz that put Emlyn Stokes in fourth place, but it was at Ranny Pool where third man Fred Chick caught his 4lb 9oz conger.

Sunday, July 22, is the next big date on the beach angling calendar because that is the next chance to pick up Garry Evans Seamaster points at the Penarth Summer Festival Open Competition that takes place on the pier and beach from 1pm to 6pm.

As well as points for the top 20 competitors there is a £200 winner’s purse thanks to main sponsor Set Up Displays as well as more cash and tackle prizes and three for the junior section

The competition is also a Penn qualifier. It costs £5 for senior entry or £2 juniors and all proceeds go to the local RNLI.
