Get back on your bike as fun ride returns to streets

-

A BIKE ride that became a popular annual fixture in the South Wales calendar is gearing up for a grand return – in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Cyclists of all abilities are being encouraged to take part in the 35-mile On Your Bike for Barnardo’s cycle ride which is planned for September 23.

Starting at Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff Bay, the route will follow a scenic trail around the Vale of Glamorgan before returning to the Bay.

A party will then welcome the riders home, where they will be given a commemorative T-shirt and goody bags.

The annual race was first held in 1982 with the help of Commonwealth Games veteran Reg Braddick and former South Wales Echo editor Geoff Rich.

Since then, it has raised more than £600,000 for the children’s charity which runs 90 specialist projects across Wales.

The ride will return to South Wales this year after a short break due to road works on the route.

First to sign up to the event was Sarah Crawley, director of Barnardo’s Cymru.

Ms Crawley said: “The emphasis is on fun, so while we welcome keen cyclists and regular cycling commuters we also want to encourage families and people whose bikes may be gathering dust in the shed – this is a great opportunity to dust yours off and get fitter while raising money for a great cause.

“On Your Bike for Barnardo’s has proved so popular with our supporters over the years, and although we took a break when the route was disrupted with road works we feel now is the time to bring it back.

“Barnardo’s Cymru supports thousands of vulnerable children, young people and families across Wales and the money we raise will help us make a real difference.”

Those who sign up to the event will be given a suggested fundraising target of £100 with the help of fundraising and training tips from the charity. Riders need to be 14 or over and under-18s must have an adult with them.

Barnardo’s Cymru works with more than 7,000 young people and families affected by issues including poverty, homelessness, disability, bereavement and abuse. It also provides support for those who are at risk of sexual exploitation.
