Traffic cameras are watching you...

-

THERE are now 46 traffic cameras in Cardiff.

Cardiff Council installed the first cameras in December 2014, the first being to stop drivers using bus lanes.

Over the three-and-a-half years since, the scheme has grown and grown and there are now 46 traffic cameras

There are 20 cameras enforcing bus lanes, eight enforcing yellow box junctions, 13 enforcing banned turns, four for no entry roads and one for a bus stop.

If caught, a driver is fined £70, reduced to £35 if paid within a fortnight

Three new cameras are currently being installed.

A yellow box junction will be enforced outside Cardiff Prison, next to Cardiff Magistrates’ Court, at the junction with Moira Terrace, Windsor Road, Adam Street and Fitzalan Place.

The second new camera will be enforcing the no right turn coming down on Cardiff Road through Llandaff, turning right by the Maltsters pub.

The council says introducing the camera is to reduce congestion in Llandaff village.

The last new camera will be enforcing the bus stop in Cardiff Bay by Mermaid Quay on New George Street.

Stopping or parking in bus stops is illegal, as it is causes a health and safety issue for those waiting or getting off a bus.

Hackney carriage drivers are able to pick up or drop off in bus stops but they are not allowed to wait.

The cameras are in place and warning notices will be issued until enforcement starts on July 30.

The scheme has made millions for the council, which says the money is earmarked to only be used for other traffic schemes.

The authority has also converted two cars to be able to spot and record infringements around the city, on zig-zag lines outside of schools and loading bays.
