Man caught by police with bag of cannabis worth £5,000 in Audi

-

A MAN was caught by police with a shopping bag stuffed full of £5,000 worth of cannabis in his Audi.

Wayne Jones, 44, from Tonyrefail , was found to have a Co-op bag packed with more than 13oz of the Class B drug in his car.

The court heard a search warrant was executed at his home on December 5 last year.

Prosecutors said Jones was seen running towards his flat, spending a few minutes inside, and coming out carrying a shopping bag.

Julian Greenwood, prosecuting, said officers searched his Audi and found the shopping bag contained a “significant amount” of cannabis.

The court heard the bag held 13.5oz of the Class B drug with a street value of nearly £5,000.

Prosecutors said the defendant had a relevant previous conviction for producing cannabis. There was no application under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Jones, from Caer Gwerlas in Tonyrefail, admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply. He entered a basis of plea, stating he was just looking after the drugs.

There was a trial of issue during which a specialist police officer gave evidence.

Judge Eleri Rees said: “I reject your basis of plea.”

Lowri Wynn Morgan, defending, accepted an immediate jail term was inevitable and asked for it to be as short as possible, reminding the judge he pleaded guilty. Jones was jailed for 12 months for a significant role and Judge Rees made an order for the drugs to be destroyed.
