Summer’s set for charity challenge

-

A 10-YEAR-OLD girl will run a charity fun run for the sixth year in a row in Septem- ber – despite living with kidney disease.

Summer Kansiray, from Bridgend, has lived with the illness for the past nine years after she was diagnosed with cancer at just 14 months old. Summer’s kidneys started deteriorating and she received her first transplant at the age of five.

Unfortunately, Summer’s new kidney started failing a few years ago and she is back on the transplant list.

With a fluid restriction of only 400ml every 24 hours, the 10-year-old has needed 11 hours of daily dialysis since February.

But that hasn’t stopped her entering the Kidney Wales 2K family fun run on Sunday, September 2.

Although Summer is not feeling well enough to train for the run, her kidney has never stopped her from participating.

Sometimes she walks the race and sometimes she has to take her wheelchair with her, but despite the pain in her legs, Summer enjoys participating every year.

This year, she has set up a Just Giving page to raise money. The Bridgend community has stood behind the 10-year-old since she was diagnosed and her determination has inspired sponsors to donate £817, far exceeding her target of £250.

Summer’s mum Joanna said: “I don’t know how she does it. She isn’t well at the moment and although she has a valid excuse not to take part, she’s determined to take part again.
