Resident sick of drug users’ mess

-

A RESIDENT has voiced her concerns over drug users littering her street with empty syringes and human waste.

She claims the noise is so loud during the night she can’t sleep and is worried children will pick up the syringes.

Jane Ruggles, who lives off Schooner Way in Cardiff Bay, said: “When I see the syringes and drug ephemera, it makes me sick. I worry a child will fall into a needle.

“My health is deteriorating because of stress and anxiety caused. I can’t sleep till late hours in the night when they go to sleep or go elsewhere.

“There’s a primary school next to the bridge where all kinds of inhalants are being used including cylinders and balloons.”

Residents claim walkways are littered with syringes which are busy walking routes especially for parents and children.

Jane says she has even confronted the drug users herself as her patience has drawn so thin.

She has this message for them: “You do not become invisible or silent when you come here. Your partying keeps us up all night and the mess you leave is disgusting.”

She added: “It makes me feel unsafe and anxious.”

Police are attempting to cut down the drug gangs in Cardiff and recently seized drugs and cash, as well as arresting 60 people.

Local Policing Inspector Phillip Griffiths said: “We are aware of issues surrounding anti-social behaviour and drug abuse in this location and have taken a number of measures to address the matter.

“Neighbourhood officers regularly scour this area for drug litter and they notify the local authority which is responsible for cleaning them up.

“There is zero tolerance of drug dealing in Cardiff. Almost 60 people were recently arrested as part of Operation Red Jet – a huge crackdown on county lines gangs and Class A drug supply – and 19 of these are already serving custodial sentences.

“We would ask people to keep reporting any issues by calling 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously via 0800 555111.”

A spokesman for Cardiff council said: “The council is also aware of the reports of drug related litter in this area and we are working towards a long term solution to this problem by working with other partner authorities.

“The area in question is cleaned regularly and if needles are discarded, we ask people to report it to the council so they can be disposed of safely.

“There is no quick fix to these issues. The possession of drugs is illegal and we will continue to work with South Wales Police and other organisations to reduce illegal drug taking on the streets of Cardiff.”
