A MAN led the police on a 13-mile car chase through the centre of Cardiff hitting 110mph in a “shocking piece of dangerous driving”.

Ryan Greening sped past Cardiff Bay Police Station at 70mph in a 30mph limit before shooting through red lights and swerving on to the wrong side of the road.

Speaking at Cardiff Crown Court, prosecutor Julian Greenwood said: “We are dealing with a particularly shocking piece of dangerous driving.”

The court heard the incident began at around 9.45pm on April 3 when the defendant was spotted by a police officer driving a Nissan Juke on Newport Road.

Prosecutors said the officer checked his records and found the vehicle was insured for someone born in 1958. He suspected the car was being driven without insurance, alerted the roads policing unit and pursued the vehicle east towards Rumney.

Mr Greenwood said: “He followed with his lights flashing. From that point, the defendant began to pick up speed very radically in a 30mph limit.”

The whole chase was captured on the police officer’s dash cam and the footage was played in court.

Greening, who had a passenger in the car with him, accelerated to 60mph on Newport Road, hitting 70mph by the Royal Oak roundabout.

He sped past the magistrates’ court on Fitzalan Road, before racing through an amber light on to Adam Street.

The defendant reached 110mph on Central Link, before passing County Hall and speeding across a roundabout past the Wales Millennium Centre.

Greening drove past the police station at 40mph over the speed limit, swerving over the Clarence Road bridge.

He ignored a red light at the junction with Clive Street and accelerated across the Ikea roundabout on to Ferry Road, passing a bus at 65mph.

A car had to swerve as Greening drove straight through a red light over a junction at Cogan Spur, before reaching 100mph approaching Penarth.

He swerved on to the wrong side of the carriageway on Lavernock Road, passing Cosmeston Lakes Country Park.

Prosecutors said the road was dark between Penarth and Sully and the defendant only just missed a vehicle coming in the other direction while travelling at 85mph.

He made a sudden left turn and the police car overshot, having to catch him up again in Barry. The chase finally ended on Court Road in Barry when Greening crashed into a parked car before he and his passenger ran out of the vehicle.

Prosecutors said he was Tasered by the police and told to lie on the ground, where he was found to have 26g of cannabis. He was arrested and told officers a friend had allowed him to borrow the car.

Greening, 24, from Charlotte Place in Barry, admitted dangerous driving without insurance and possessing cannabis.

The court heard he had never held a driving licence.

Judge Tom Crowther QC jailed Greening for 10 months. He was disqualified from driving for two years and four months, and must take an extended retest. An order was made for the cannabis to be destroyed.
